The output from a traceroute will be longer than that of a ping. When completed it will look similar to this:

How To Use The Traceroute Command
Traceroutes are a primary troubleshooting tool that trace the actual networking path between you and the destination IP Address.
Notice: Windows and Mac computers will use slightly different commands.
Step 1) Open the Command Prompt/Terminal
1) Open your Start Menu and go to "Run", or use the HOTKEY Combination WINKEY+R
2) In the RUN box type in "cmd" without the quotes, then hit Enter or click "OK"
Mac Terminal:
1)Go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal
Step 2) Running the Traceroute Command
tracert IP_ADDRESS

traceroute IP_ADDRESS
