How To Use The Traceroute Command

This guide will teach you how to Traceroute an IP Address.
Traceroutes are a primary troubleshooting tool that trace the actual networking path between you and the destination IP Address. Notice: Windows and Mac computers will use slightly different commands.

Step 1) Open the Command Prompt/Terminal

Windows Command Prompt:
1) Open your Start Menu and go to "Run", or use the HOTKEY Combination WINKEY+R
2) In the RUN box type in "cmd" without the quotes, then hit Enter or click "OK"

Mac Terminal:
1)Go to Applications > Utilities > Terminal

Step 2) Running the Traceroute Command

Windows Command Prompt:
tracert IP_ADDRESS

Example:
C:\ tracert 72.249.170.248

Mac/Linux Terminal:
traceroute IP_ADDRESS

Example:
Desktop:User ~ $ traceroute 72.249.170.248

The output from a traceroute will be longer than that of a ping. When completed it will look similar to this:
tracert 72.249.170.248
